How to store perfumes to keep them intact over time

A quality perfume can be expensive. But few people know that improper storage can ruin an extraordinary perfume in just a few months. The enemies are always the same: heat, light, humidity, oxygen.

If you want your Inferno to remain extraordinary for months, you need to know how to store it. It's not complicated, but it's important.

The enemies of perfume: what to avoid

1. Heat

Heat accelerates oxidation. Olfactory molecules degrade faster when exposed to high temperatures.

Ideal temperature: Constant 15-20°C. If you can't maintain this temperature, at least avoid drastic changes.

2. Light (especially UV)

Ultraviolet light is devastating for perfumes. It literally breaks down the chemical structures of fragrances.

Solution: Store the perfume in a dark place. If the bottle is transparent, put it in an opaque box.

3. Humidity

High humidity corrodes the cap and compromises the seal. Low humidity (30-50%) is ideal.

Is the bathroom a bad place? Yes. It has constant steam, hence high humidity.

4. Oxygen

The more the perfume is exposed to air, the more it oxidizes. Always close the cap tightly after use.

---

The ideal storage location

1. A dark, cool closet, in a climate-controlled room. This is ideal.

2. A dresser in a dark bedroom. This is fine if the room doesn't have extreme temperature variations.

3. A kitchen cabinet, away from the oven. If the cabinet is far from heat sources, it's fine.

4. A cool, dark pantry with low humidity. If you have such a space, it's pure gold.

What you should NOT do

Mistake 1: Storing in the bathroom

The bathroom is enemy number one. Constant humidity, varying temperatures, light exposure.

Mistake 2: Storing in a window or on a desk in direct sunlight

This is the fastest way to ruin a perfume. Even if the room is cool, UV light still penetrates.

Mistake 3: Storing on a radiator in winter

Radiators create "hot spots" – areas of intense heat.

Mistake 4: Storing in a car in summer

A car parked in the summer sun reaches 50-60°C. A perfume literally starts to degrade.

Mistake 5: Leaving the bottle open

Opening a perfume bottle does not "improve" it – it ruins it. Always close the cap.

Long-term storage

For 6-12 months of non-use:

  • Store in a dark, cool closet (15-18°C ideal)
  • Ensure the cap is completely sealed
  • If available, store in the original box
  • Avoid temperature variations

For more than a year of non-use:

  • In addition to the above points, consider storing in the refrigerator
  • A refrigerator is perfect: constant temperature, dark, controlled humidity
  • It is not strictly "necessary" for quality perfumes, but it helps
---

Can I put perfume in the refrigerator?

Short answer: Yes, but it's not mandatory.

A refrigerator is a perfect environment: low temperature (4-8°C), stable, dark, controlled humidity. If you want to maximize the longevity of a perfume you rarely use, the refrigerator is a smart choice.

How to store in the refrigerator:

  • Place the perfume in a small opaque box
  • Position it at the back (not on the door)
  • Make sure it does not touch food or drinks
  • Leave it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before wearing it
---

How long does an opened perfume last

Unopened bottle: 3-5 years if stored correctly.

Opened bottle, stored correctly: 1-2 years with optimal longevity and quality.

Opened bottle, stored poorly: 3-6 months. After this, the perfume will have noticeable changes.

For Inferno (25% extract), a correctly stored bottle will last 2-3 years even after opening.

---

Signs that your perfume is degrading

1. The color has changed

If the perfume was transparent and has turned yellowish, oxidation has occurred.

2. The smell has changed

If the perfume no longer smells as you remember it, storage has altered it.

3. Longevity has decreased

If it lasts less than before, the perfume has degraded.

4. There is visible separation

If you see layers or suspended particles, something has gone wrong.

---

The summary: the 5 golden rules

1. Store in a dark place. Closet, dresser, opaque box.

2. Store in a cool place (15-20°C ideal). Not next to radiators.

3. Store away from extreme humidity. Not in the bathroom. If you live in a humid climate, a refrigerator is a good option.

4. Always close the cap tightly. No air inside the bottle after use.

5. Store in the original box if possible. Provides double protection.
