Men's facial moisturizer: why it's essential (even for those who think they don't need it)
One of the most persistent myths in men's skincare is: "If I have oily skin, I don't need a moisturizer." This is completely false, and this mistaken belief causes significant damage to many men's skin over the years.
The myth of oily skin that doesn't need moisturizer
The misunderstanding stems from the fact that oily skin already produces sebum (natural oil). But sebum and moisture are completely different things.
Sebum: An oil produced by the sebaceous glands. It protects the skin but does not moisturize it.
Moisture: Water present in skin cells. This is what actually hydrates.
How skin hydration works
A moisturizer contains two types of ingredients that work together:
Humectants: These ingredients attract water to the skin from the surrounding environment: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sorbitol.
Emollients: These ingredients seal water onto the skin, preventing its evaporation: ceramides, squalane, jojoba oil.
Key ingredients to look for in a moisturizer
Hyaluronic acid: The king of humectants. A single molecule can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water.
Niacinamide: Not only hydrates, but also helps regulate sebum, reduce inflammation, and improve skin texture.
Ceramides: Rebuild the skin barrier and seal in moisture.
