Men's Sunscreen: SPF for those who have never thought about it
If you don't use sunscreen, you're in an overwhelming majority of men. Many men have simply never considered SPF as part of their daily routine. It's "women's stuff," they think, or "I don't need it, I'm indoors all day."
Let me be frank: this is one of the worst decisions you can make for your skin. UV rays are the #1 enemy of skin, the #1 cause of premature aging, and the #1 cause of skin cancer.
Why SPF is so important (and why men ignore it)
Reason 1: Lack of visible damage UV damage doesn't appear immediately. But the damage accumulates. In 10, 15, 20 years, people who haven't used SPF start to show the signs.
Reason 2: Perceived discomfort Many men think SPF is sticky, shiny, or expensive. This was true 20 years ago. Today, SPF technology is completely different.
How does SPF work?
SPF stands for "Sun Protection Factor." It's a measure of how much protection a product provides against UVB rays.
SPF 30: Blocks 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50: Blocks 98% of UVB rays
For protection against UVA rays (which cause aging), make sure to choose a "broad-spectrum" sunscreen.
Chemical vs. Mineral SPF: Which is better?
Chemical sunscreen: Absorbs UV rays and converts them into heat. Common ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate. Advantages: lightweight, invisible.
Mineral sunscreen: Reflects UV rays like a physical barrier. Active ingredients: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide. Advantages: less irritating.
